You've got to be kidding me - ther's no easy way to do it. Or at least it appears that way - major-poor design flaw. The one I am replacing came out easy because it was cracked in several places. It is one solid piece and I can't get the new one to fit. In order to remove/install the headlamp assembly you have to remove the front bumper cover first by removing the 6 pin-type retainers on the radiator sight shield (that black thing on the top). Then remove the 2 upper front bumper cover bolts. Remove the 6 screws connecting the front bumper cover to the fender splash shields. (If you have a valance panel you will need to remove those 6 screws as well.) Position the splash shields aside and remove the 4 other bumper cover nuts on the reinforment supports. Disconnect all lamp electrical connectors and you have just removed the front bumper cover. Once that nightmare is over. You can now remove the pushpin and bolt on the top of the headlamp assembly as well as the two bolts below the headlamp assembly. Reverse the procedure to install the new one. Hope this helps. If I remember correctly they are phillips head screws. Now the panel is lose and should pull out with one push clip on the inner side. The switch is held onto the panel with 4 lock taps. Release the taps and the switch slides out. Before removing the switch completely, try unplugging the electrical connection and replugging back in. This is done to check for a bad connection, instead of a bad part.

I need to make sure about something concerning the lights. Do the headlights go out or do the dash lights go out. If the headlights go out, then you are looking in the right area. If the dash lights go out and the headlights are still on, it is possible that the instrument panel cluster is bad.

I replaced an IP cluster that had this problem. The customer had taken it to the dealership several times. They replaced the headlight switch and the headlight module. 200 bucks later, it's still doing the same thing. There are ways to test these systems to verify if they are bad or not, instead of replacing this part and that part. Hope this helps. Christopher

On the left (driver's) side of the core support (the inner structure at the front of the vehicle) on top of the headlamp are three bolts. Remove these with either an 8mm socket or a flat head screwdriver. The headlamp will slide forward. On the back of the headlamp there is a black or gray bulb retainer. Twist this counterclockwise and slide it back on the headlamp wiring harness. Unplug the headlamp bulb from the harness. Insert a new bulb into the headlamp. Plug it into the harness and replace the twist retainer. Reinstall the headlamp into the core support and install the three bolts. Turn on the lamps and ensure correct operation and close the hood. In front of the radiator is a black plastic cover that has about 4 plastic rivets that you pop out by pulling up on the center of the rivets. Once this is out, examine the top of the headlight assembly and find two metal clips that slide upwards. Slide them up until the stop. The headlight assembly now pops out. Change the bulb. Reinstall the parts.

Now if the lense is hazy and its not moisture, you should return them, or get a special compound that will remove any hazy-ness from the lense. But if moisture is the problem, you just need to let them sit in a dry warm area for a little and problem solved. putting it back in requires even more wiggling, as you tighten the plastic ring and lock it in place (pay attention that you get the light back in flush to the body work)

don't worry if you break the plastic rings, dealers always have them on hand because their techs break them frequently, $20/side at the worst

How can I clean the inside of my headlight?

I have a 1997 mecury sable and need to get inside of my headlights to clean it. how can i do this?How can I clean the inside of my headlight?you can't. headlights are sealed. since you mentioned age and make, I am guessing your headlights have %26quot;hazed%26quot; over. become a chalky like look.

there are a couple fixes for this.

1. Novus makes a product that works pretty well in cleaning them up. They are a glass/plastic company and you can find their product in auto body supply stores.

2. put a high speed buffer on them with compound and then wax and actually buff them back up.

3. wet sand the lens in levels from 800-1500 grit sand paper and then high speed buff them back up to shine after wards.

4. wet sand as above, but instead of buffing them, actually clear coat them. can be done with a spray can but better be good otherwise a paint spray gun is recommended.

5. buy new headlights

If you have scratches and yellowing on the outside, you can buy acrylic polishing buffs. But you may find better lights at your local junk yard.

1) Upgrade to HID - you can get kits to do this. It requires modification to the vehicle, can be expensive and it usually illegal to use on road. The only legal way (usually) is to have this system fitted when the vehicle is manufactured or through a main dealer. The reason is that HID can be fatal if installed incorrectly or touched in the event of a collision. For these reasons many people choose to not go down this route.

2) Upgrade the headlight bulbs. It won't deliver the same effect as HID but will be cheaper, easier, legal and safer. If you want the blue effect then you could try something like Philips Blue Vision. If you're looking for all round performance then Philips' X-Treme Power is good, or Osram's Night Breaker (Osram are Sylvania's Euro equivalent).

It's not too complicated to change a headlamp. It's just kinda hard. I know it sounds like it's same thing, but this is why. Usually the bulb is held into place by a mount with a ring that turns to lock it in. It's just a big FREAKIN' PAIN to try and turn that plastic ring, with trying to fit your hands and fingers into the small space. If it's the driver side headlamp, sometimes you've got to take out battery so you've got room to work. It's not complicated, just a hassle.

Once you've got the ring turned, you'll see how it unlocks it. It doesn't unscrew like a pop bottle cap. Then you pull out the bulb. Think you can also remove the wiring from the part first before trying to move the locking ring which helps to not damage the wires. Once out, you merely replace the bulb like changing batteries, and then reassemble the whole thing again. It's much easier to pay the $20 to let someone else do it.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!! If you do it yourself, you really really REALLY have to make sure that the new bulb has all your fingerprints off it. In fact, don't ever touch the bulb itself. This is why.

Bulbs are halogen which burn extremely hot, that's why they throw a brighter light down the road. But they are sooooo hot, that they can burn extremely easily. Your fingers have grease on them, part of your body's stuff. Not talking about engine or motor grease, this is a natural oil on your fingers and hands. If this gets onto the bulb, the oils from your hands will actually begin to cook, or fry, just like french fries in cookng grease, and that will cause the bulb to burn out or even maybe explode. There is not enough room behind the device to just unplug and plug in the new lamp. I tried to remove the assembly by taking out the two screws at the top that hold it in place. Push it in under the headlight assembly and between the front facia. This will help keep you from scractching your chrome Bezelette (bumper insert). Kind of tricky the first time but after you do it once, it is a piece of cake. The hard part is popping it out of the snaps.

Here is the factory service manual instructions:

Open hood, disconnect and isolate the battery

negative cable.

Remove the two headlamp unit retaining

screws. (two screws on top)

Gently pull headlamp unit forward, unsnapping

it from the lower retaining clip. Be

careful not to damage lower retaining clip upon

removal. It also helps if you wiggle it side to side and pull at the same time.

Disconnect the headlamp unit electrical connector.

Connect the headlamp unit electrical connect.

Gently place the headlamp unit into the body

opening. Make sure the lower retaining clip is placed

on the retaining bar on the bottom of the headlamp

unit. Be careful not to damage lower retaining

clip upon installation.

Install the two headlamp unit retaining screws

Reinstall the battery negative cable.

Its a one piece headlight assembly and the bulb locks into the back. Most of the time that haze you see is on the outside of the lens. You can go to a local auto parts store or Walmart and try some PlastX cleaner. It worked pretty well on the wife's headlights and dont be afraid to use it several times. You can also go to an auto supply store and get various grades of wet/dry sandpaper (start with 480 grit and then go lighter and lighter like, 1200, then 2400) Use the roughest paper first, and plenty of water, then use successively smoother grit until you get to the smoothest paper. You are actually just polishing the lenses so go light with the 480 grit or you will put deep scratches in the plastic lens. Try the PlastX first, as it does a good job and if you use it enough with enough elbow grease you will be surprised at how much it cleans them up. You will see the wires running to the light. there is a locking ring that holds the bulb on the light. Turn the locking ring counter clock wise.Depending on which light it is you may have to remove the battery to gain space to get your hand on the ring and the light socket. Once the ring is off the light socket with the bulb should be able to be pullet straight out. Then you'll just lift the little locking clip on the plug and pull the bulb and plug apart.. When you install the new bulb it is important that you don't touch the glass bulb. If you want to ensure a long bulb life you can take some rubbing alcohol and wipe the glass part of the bulb clean of anything that could be on it. Yes even a new bulb could use this little treatment to make the bulb life longer. Then install the bulb, the lock ring and then the plug. It is really way simpler than it sounds! Just make sure you remember which way the lock ring was facing when it came off. And you don't try to put it on backwards. For either the Headlamps or Front Park and Turn Signal Lamps

1. To remove the six plastic fasteners from the shield use a screwdriver to pull up the center of the fastener. Be careful not to break the fasteners that hold the shield in place.

2. Using a 13 mm socket, remove the two bolts from the headlamp. Pull the headlamp assembly up and toward the front of the vehicle to access the bulb assembly.

When replacing the driver檚 side headlamp, twist the bulb assembly one-eighth turn counterclockwise and remove it from the headlamp assembly. When replacing the passenger檚 side headlamp, twist the bulb assembly one-eighth turn clockwise and remove it from the headlamp assembly.

3. Disconnect the bulb base from the socket by lifting the plastic locking tab.

4. Remove the black collar by turning it counterclockwise.

5. Remove the bulb by pulling the bulb straight out.

6. Snap a new bulb into the socket.

7. Reinstall the bulb assembly by reversing Steps 1 through 3, making sure the lower leg of the headlamp bracket is properly seated into the wedge-shaped retainer.
