How do I successfully remove the headlight switch from a '71 Chevrolet C10?

I believe it's the kind of switch where the shaft stays connected to the knob.How do I successfully remove the headlight switch from a '71 Chevrolet C10?there is a button on the bottom of the switch you must push while pulling the knob out. be sure to unplug the switch first otherwise your headlights might come on.
